A l'école primaire Charles Lorilleux, vaste bâtiment de briques rouges qui dominait la petite gare de Puteaux., nous jouions aux Cow-boys et aux Indiens, aux gendarmes et aux voleurs, ou encore aux Français et aux Allemands. Je précise que les derniers arrivés dans le jeu écopaient du rôle des gendarmes ou du rôle des Allemands. En revanche je ne me souviens pas que nous ayons eu une préférence pour un rôle d'Indien ou de cow-boy.
Toute l'imagerie cinématographique des années 50 rappelait le courage français, l'ingéniosité française, l'esprit français, face à la cruauté et à la bêtise allemande dont les seuls atouts étaient dans la machinerie, l'obéissance, et l'organisation. Ce nationalisme comparatif s'inscrivait dans la lignée des caricatures du genre des dessins de HANSI dont je lisais chez ma grand-mère CHEVILLARD un vieux livre de bandes dessinées un peu dépenaillé intitulé "Histoire d'Alsace racontée aux petits enfants de France par l'oncle Hansi". Le soldat allemand du début du XXe siècle y était un grand escogriffe à l'allure ridicule avec son crâne rasé et ses petites lunettes rondes en acier, qui chapardait ce qu'il pouvait trouver, en témoignant un goût particulier pour de grosses horloges emportées sur son dos.
Je n'ai jamais connu la guerre alors que je suis né en plein milieu. Il m'est ainsi particulièrement étonnant que ma mère ait voulu faire un enfant - moi - à cette époque du printemps 42, pendant que le pays était occupé et qu'une libération paraissait encore peu envisageable. Pourtant elle a toujours dit avoir voulu faire cet enfant. Peut-on imaginer qu'elle était confiante dans la situation ? La France de Pétain lui convenait-elle ? Elle n'a jamais exprimé le moindre goût pour le fascisme ni la moindre trace d'antisémitisme. Une convenance à la hauteur de sa conscience politique, vraisemblablement. Je m'étonne de ne pas l'avoir plus précisément questionnée sur ce thème.
La vie a fait que je me rapprochais (de très près) de l'Allemagne et des Allemands. Certainement par les mystères de l'amour. Peut-être aussi dans mon vague désir d'universalité qui m'a poussé à rentrer dans la langue et dans la culture.
Balayant d'un coup de coeur la nullité de mes résultats scolaires en allemand, je me réjouissais d'acquérir si rapidement des idiomes et des références du quotidien qui me faisaient valoir auprès de mes interlocuteurs germaniques au point que l'on me prit une fois pour un Belge : sachant que les Français ne parlent pas allemand, je ne pouvais donc être français et parler aussi facilement l'allemand. J'ai aimé lire KÄSTNER et BÖLL, mais je faisais le grand plongeon avec GRASS dont je dévorais le Blechtrommel et qui m?ouvrait à la langue.
L'Allemand est devenu pour moi une sorte de voisin, très proche et très familier, que l'on reçoit et qui nous accueille, à qui l'on reconnaît une personnalité différente, mais dont certaines réactions ou coutumes semblent encore étranges parfois. Ainsi, je suis régulièrement sidéré par cette façon de pensée unique, de consensus global, que j'observe chez les Allemands.
Je me force à penser chaque fois qu'il doit en être de même chez les Français et que je ne m'en aperçois pas.

Not a complete book in my opinion I think it does a decent job on providing the basic information and is fairly easy to read. The test questions seriously need to be revamped. There really is no critical thinking, it is just regurgitation of what the book believes. To pass the tests, you NEED to either memorize the chapter word for word or buy all of the extra materials at [...] and take all of the extra practice tests and memorize them. I don’t feel this was an accident and was done to induce more sales of add-on materials.
