Je n'ai pas eu à faire l'expérience sinistre qui consiste à « aller au boulot » : j'ai eu cette « chance », apparemment très rare, de toujours aller travailler avec plaisir, même lorsque c'était difficile.
Quant aux petits boulots, je n'en ai exercé qu'un seul, et seulement pendant deux heures : vendeur de télés au porte-à-porte dans le fameux quartier de la Goutte d'Or qui à cette époque concentrait l'essentiel de l'extrême pauvreté parisienne.
C'était l'hiver 1966 et j'avais décidé de gagner l'indépendance financière qui permettrait de quitter la « demeure » paternelle de Bougival et d'installer ma famille dans un logement indépendant. Une petite annonce m'avait accrochée. Je me suis retrouvé en fin de journée au Métro Barbès avec une vingtaine de jeunes hommes autour d'un chef qui nous indiqua la procédure. Chacun se vit attribuer une rue. Je plongeai dans mon premier immeuble. L'escalier était à peine éclairé, et je me dirigeai à l'oreille vers les étages d'où provenaient des bruits mélangés de radio, de cris, de gamelles entrechoquées. Pas de sonnette. Je frappai à la porte. Je garde l'image de cette pièce carrée, avec en plein milieu une table carrée recouverte d?une toile cirée, et une grosse dame dans son tablier à carreaux qui s'affairait devant des casseroles glougloutant des nuages. Un type était assis ou plutôt effondré devant la table, des gamins piaillaient. Je devais les convaincre d'acheter ma télé à crédit. Aujourd'hui je ne sais plus si je devais vendre une télé à crédit ou du crédit pour une télé. Je sais encore ma gorge serrée, ma brûlante conscience de l'incongruité de ma proposition, pire, son indécence. Et mon envie de leur donner un billet de cent francs que je n'avais pas moi-même. Je sortis et tentais de recommencer plus loin. Mon incapacité à faire ce job était éclatante, mais je refusai encore de m'avouer mon échec. Je persévérais dans cette tragédie pendant une bonne heure avant de retourner au lieu de rendez-vous et déclarer forfait. Les autres, plusieurs d'entre eux, avaient réussi et, joyeux, ils pourraient recommencer le lendemain. Je m'enfuyais.
Je trouvais mon premier vrai travail le mois suivant. C'était si facile à cette époque ! JOURDE et son fils tenaient la boutique de fournitures scolaires la plus proche de l'école, au coin de la rue des Beaux-Arts et de la rue Bonaparte. JOURDE avait disposé sur son comptoir un grand registre noir où les patrons architectes inscrivaient leurs demandes de nègres. Nègre était le nom générique de tout dessinateur ou projeteur des agences d'architecture, quelle que soit la couleur de sa peau, il n'y avait rien de raciste ni de péjoratif. Un type était en train d'écrire sa requête. Je lis par-dessus son épaule. Il cherchait un nègre de 1ère classe, pour travailler à Chatou, juste à côté de chez moi. J'étais seulement en fin de 2ème classe. Nous tombâmes immédiatement d'accord. Je suis resté deux ans chez lui. Il m'a appris le métier.
Après mon diplôme, DUCHEZ avait moins de travail et se consacrait à l'expertise. Je cherchais une autre agence. J'ouvrai l'annuaire des architectes de l'Ile de France à la lettre A, et ne téléphonai qu'à ceux situés sur ma route vers Paris. En moins d'une heure, j'avais trouvé, à la lettre B, une place chez Jean-Claude BOUILLON, avenue Victor-Hugo.
Pendant le service militaire, je trouvais le moyen de travailler le soir dans quelques agences. Je donnais aussi quelques coups de main dans l'agence BURCKHARDT PARTNER, la filiale française d'une agence suisse de dimension européenne. Le lendemain de ma libération du service militaire, j'étais déjà salarié dans cette agence. Je rentrais dans le vif du sujet.
